MERRILLVILLE, IN – More children die from cancer in the United States than any other disease. The Andrean High School Boys and Girls Basketball teams have teamed up with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s Vs. Cancer program to change this. Throughout the season, the team is raising awareness and funds for kids with cancer, and they will celebrate their efforts on January 9th with their Vs. Cancer awareness games.
Started by a pediatric brain cancer survivor and former collegiate athlete, Vs. Cancer empowers any sports team, any athlete, and any community to help kids with cancer. As a signature fundraising campaign of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, Vs. Cancer proceeds help fund child life programs in local hospitals and groundbreaking research to cure pediatric brain tumors, the deadliest childhood cancer.
In partnership with Vs. Cancer, the Andrean High School Boys and Girls Basketball teams have selected Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis to receive a portion of the funds they raise. The Andrean Boys and Girls Basketball teams also plan to honor a pediatric cancer survivor during their Vs. Cancer game.
“As coaches, we ask our teams to be tough and battle through adversity. Kids and families fighting childhood cancer show real toughness. Our basketball program looks forward to helping in that fight,” said Coach Scheub of the Girls team. Coach Stangel of the Boys team added, “It is part of our mission as part of the Andrean family to serve those in need. Vs. Cancer has given us an opportunity to help put an end to this terrible disease.”
Dave Mays, campaign manager of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s Central region, understands how vital these athletes are to the nonprofit’s mission. “We applaud the efforts and generous spirit of the Andrean Boys and Girls Basketball teams! We are so grateful for the continued support that the Andrean community continues to give towards this partnership with Vs. Cancer. Vs. Cancer wasn’t just built by athletes for athletes. We were started by a pediatric brain cancer survivor, and we see every day how important family support and research are for children & teens to thrive. With the support of these incredible teams and the entire Andrean community, we’re fighting for healthier, happier futures for these kids!”
